Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic

Is the Treatment Painful?

No.  Adjustment procedures are chosen for each patient taking into account patient comfort, the condition and state of progress. Occasionally adjustments of a chronic or severe problem may cause transient mild discomfort, but this does not persist.  The relief following a successful adjustment is often remarkable.  Additionally at Well Adjusted Health, Mark practices a particularly gentle form of chiropractic.

Is Chiropractic just for ‘Bad Backs’?

Chiropractors treat low back pain, neck pain. general aches and pains including those of joints, muscle spasms and cramp, frozen shoulder and tennis elbow arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck.  They also treat joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis alongside core osteoarthritis treatments and exercise.  Chiropractic can also help with headaches secondary to neck problems and prevention of migraine type headaches.

Am I too old?

Age really is no barrier!  Treatment is safe for people of any age; procedures differ for the very young, those with bone disease such as osteoporosis and the elderly.  Mark’s daughter Jessica was seen when she was less than 24 hours old!  Mark’s current oldest patient is 95.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on your particular condition, its severity and your response to treatment.  At the end of your initial consultation Mark will go over your specific requirements before any treatment commences.  You will be provided with a Report of Findings which will clearly outline the proposed treatment plan for you.

What happens at the end of the treatment?

At the conclusion of a course of treatment many of our patients choose to attend the Clinic periodically in much the same way as they do with the Dentist.  Periodic visits can help maintain what has been achieved through treatment and/or help prevent new problems arising.  The decision to continue with Maintenance Care is very much a personal one and is not obligatory.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Chiropractic is remarkably safe when carried out by a suitably qualified practitioner.  In fact a number of studies have shown that chiropractic treatment is significantly safer then common alternatives such as long-term use of painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication or surgery.

Can I help myself as well?

Absolutely!  Recent research has indicated that patients who perform rehabilitative exercises in conjunction with their chiropractic treatment improve more quickly than those who do not.  During your treatment we will instruct you on what exercise will help your condition.

Can Chiropractic help people with Arthritis?

Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis can be helped alongside core osteoarthritis treatments and exercise.

Will I need X-rays?

This depends on the nature of the case.  It is the policy of the Clinic to recommend X-ray only when it is judged clinically necessary.

Can I claim money back on my Private Health Insurance Scheme?

Yes.  Well Adjusted Health Chiropractic Clinic is registered for insurance with most of the large insurers.  Please call us to check. Some policies require you to be referred by your GP or a consultant so it is always recommended to check first.  If claiming through medical insurance please inform reception when booking in for your initial consultation.  We require payment on the day but we will provide you with all the necessary paperwork and receipts to make claims.

What training and regulation do Chiropractors have to adhere to?

Chiropractic is a regulated profession.  In common with medical practitioners and dentists, all chiropractors are registered by law under the Chiropractors Act 1994, and the title ‘Chiropractor’ is protected under this legislation.  The profession is statutorily regulated through the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and it is illegal to practice as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.  Mark, your chiropractor at the clinic, is a member of the British Chiropractic Association and is fully registered with the GCC.  The GCC sets the standards of education in chiropractic and all chiropractors must have graduated from an accredited institution before being accepted onto the Register.  Chiropractors who are members of the British Chiropractic Association will have completed the minimum of a four-year full-time course that has both UK regulator accreditation and international recognition.
