Happy Life, Happy Bones?

Something we’ve all probably seen is that happy people tend to lead happier lives. Now research is showing us that older women who were more satisfied with their lives had higher bone density than their dissatisfied peers.

The research published in the November/December 2014 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine showed that based on a life satisfaction survey which looked at easiness of life, happiness, and loneliness, the satisfied group at baseline readings had the highest bone mineral density(BMD). The dissatisfied group not only had lower BMD but also had the highest body mass index, lower grip strength and were more likely to be smokers as well as more likely to use medication and higher morbidity rate.
